January Dividend Update

Febuary is almost here so it's time to report on my January dividend income!  January's dividend total was $238.88 which is up from the $213.12 that I made last quarter in October. I got a little help from WMT and PEP dividends slipping in to January instead of December.

In comparison, last years January's total was $184.27 which means my dividend's for the month have grown 29.6%. Not too shabby growth there, hopefully next January will see similar growth.

January 2015 Purchases
  • Exxon (XOM) - 14 shares @ $90.00
  • Unilever (UL) - 30 shares @ $39.33

January 2015 Dividend Increases
  • Sysco (SYY) - From .29 to .30 ( a 3.4% increase )
January 2015 Dividend Income
  • Walmart (WMT) - $16.32

  1. Up, up and away! A year over year 30% growth rate is fantastic and a heck of a way to start the new year. I remember a couple of years ago looking at your chart and seeing now how things have grown is incredible. Not to mention your dividends are nice and even, with no one position carrying the bulk of the load.

Glad to be following along on this journey with you!

    1. That'd be great if I could keep up that 30% forever but as my portfolio grows the YOY growth should slow a bit yet still deliver more and more total dividends.

Ya my dividends are fairly balanced and this comes from a diversified portfolio where I'm not incredibly comfortable putting a lot of weight in a single company, no matter how strong it may be. As a result my dividends are fairly balanced as well since I really have no low dividend payers like Visa, and no super high yielders.

  2. A very newb question... but what is the length of the moving average you use to calculate your monthly dividends? 3-month? I recently began investing and my payments are a bit more sporadic as I only own a few quality companies. I think creating a moving average will help keep me motivated.

    1. I use a 4 month average. It's just an arbitrary number I set it to. I'm not sure what most bloggers use in their charts. Thanks

  3. Love that chart! Congrats on the dividend income and the new contributions. Both XOM and UL are great companies and would like to add em to my portfolio as well.

    1. For sure, I'm thinking about another XOM purchase in the near future. It's so cheap right now and oil is starting to rise again.

  5. Way to keep growing the dividend income stream! Your chart is impressive, I know it is definitely not an easy task to keep the growth at practically 45 degrees as you've done. Way to go...keep up the great work!

Wishing you continued success my friend. AFFJ

  6. Captain,

I believe there's not much more to say than "look at the awesome upward slope of that graph!" Another excellent month, well done. Your new year couldn't have started better than with a 30% YOY increase in income.

    Thank you for sharing.

    Keep it up,

    1. I think both are fantastic companies but I went with Exxon because Chevron is actually my largest holding already. I thought I'd add some diversity within the sector by purchasing Exxon. I may buy more here soon as well, stay tuned. :-0

  10. Good Job Captain!
Slow and steady wins the race.
Great purchases. I will be adding Exxon Mobil / Chevron / ConocoPhillips / Helmerich and Payne and maybe Royal Dutch Shell.
Good deals in the oil sectors at the moment and so things will even out as we place more money in.
Thanks for sharing this incredible journey with us. Much Love.

  11. Captain,

A very solid month in Dividend income! What's awesome is that there really isn't one that had $150 and made up the majority of your income, very spread out. Congrats on the month and look forward to hearing more about your progress, don't lose site of the goal!

  12. Love seeing that chart of yours every month. Just goes to show that what we are doing here is real with real results. Like the UL purchase you recently made. I would love to add to that position but will wait for a little better pricing. Right now I'm focused on my Canadian banks as those yields seem pretty juicy at current levels. Thanks for sharing your update.

  15. Captain,

Great moth of passive income right there. And you've gotta love the way that chart looks. Love seeing the chart progress nicely up and to the right. :)

Solid buys there with XOM and UL as well. UL has popped to fair value now, so I'm glad I was able to buy in at the $40 level. Gotta get in while the getting is good.

    Keep it up!

    Best regards.

  16. Great job on the growth! Sometimes it takes time to see results of this long portfolio process but having a 30% growth in a year is amazing! Good move on UL too, starting to like that one!

  20. Nice and growing dividend income. So basically another let's say $1,700 monthly and you can retire. That is a great dream to work on.

  22. Capitain,

29.6%. Great progress in one year. Based on your chart, it looks like this was a record month for you, so congrats on the great month! Nice pick ups in XOM and UL. I love consumer product companies and own quite a bit in PG myself. I would love to add some UL like you in the upcoming months, so lets see if I can pull the trigger on the investment!

Keep up the great work, you are making tremendous progress.

  23. 30% YoY growth is fantastic! Your graph shows that you've been dedicated and worked hard to continually grow your dividends. Always good to see the moving average consistently moving higher. Keep up the good work!

  24. You got profits from 9 of your companies, get a raise from 1 and incresed your stake in 2 more. Uau! What a month! And a 30% increase YoY? Just imagine if you just could keep dividend growth above 20%...
    Cheers!
