Recent Buy AT&T (T)

It's time for this months purchase and usually I try to choose a stock which I feel is undervalued and for the most part I think I do that. However I feel that there are times where one can look past the stocks which are on sale and find a compelling reason to put money elsewhere. This was one of those times for me.

It's beginning to sound more and more like the $49 Billion DTV acquisition will not be blocked by the FCC regulators and is expected to be completed by June. That along with the integration of the Iusacell and Nextel Mexico networks gives AT&T a major footprint into Latin America.

AT&T is also looking to offer exclusive content for connected vehicles such as videos and games which can be streamed onto personal mobile devices later this year. There are also expansion plans for AT&T's Gigapower 1Gbps internet service to 7 new markets including Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; St. Louis and San Antonio.

I purchased another 33 shares of AT&T at $34.99 this week.

AT&T Dividend Growth

  1. Nice purchase, Captain. Ive been watching it and seemed to have missed it to buy under $33. I am still torn about adding to my position as the 5.4% dividend is nothing to sneeze about.

Congrats on adding more to your dividend income. Keep it up!

    1. Yep, me too. I'm terribly bad at timing most of the time. I managed to buy on a day where the stock rallied a bit off of the vehicle content news. Damn the luck.

  2. Great purchase! I should look to add some more as well. It will be great for growth of DirecTV deal goes through. While the dividend growth is nothing to envy, it beats inflation, and the base dividend is already quite good. Thanks for the write-up!

    1. It would be nice to see some growth out of the deal. It's tough to find significant dividend growth with a yield as high as T offers that's for sure.

  3. Captain,

Nice pickup. We will definitely add more shares in our Roth IRA's next year when we can add monies. The dividend yield is still juicy at these levels.

    All the best.

    1. I'm not too familiar with ROTH IRA's, how many times are you allowed to make transactions each year ?

  4. Captain,

Nice job and the $62 in forward income you just added will be incredible. What's sweet is you almost are already picking up two shares per reinvestment alone per year with this purchase. I am curious on how accretive the earnings will be with the direct tv event will be. I wonder if they will do better than the 2% increase to their dividend...

    Congrats and great foundation stock!

    1. Hey Lanny, it's not often when my monthly buys which are usually a bit over $1000 are able to give me an extra $15+ every quarter. Higher dividend growth would be welcome but I'm not holding my breath. :-)

  5. Congratulations on picking up some T, we have a very close cost basis there. T had been lacking in growth the past few years but the cash flow and dividend income is always present, and this year might be a game changer with the DTV acquisition you mentioned above, we might see a much faster growth.

Thanks for sharing your recent buy.

    1. I've made a few purchases prior to this one and since the stock doesn't move much I'm almost exactly at my previous cost basis. It'll be interesting to see how the stock reacts if the merger is approved. maybe we could be back down to a 5% yield or less. Tough to say for sure though.

  9. Hi CP,

SWEET purchase there with AT&T. That nearly 6% yield is juicy as hell. I'd love to get me some of that, but as I'm trying to stick with CAD stocks for the time being, I settled with Telus last month.

    Best regards,

    1. CP,

Are you concerned at all about the insanely high payout ratio?

      Delete
    2. Not really because in some sectors payout ratio is a poor way to measure a company's ability to pay a dividend. The telecommunications industry has several stocks with payout ratios over 100% which are actually safe for dividends. For example Verizon's payout ratio was over 500% a couple years ago.

  12. This 5.2% yield is actually the best Aristocrat you could get.
I'm happy to have some in my small portfolio as well.

Great purchase. Keep up the good work Captain. :)

  13. Funny cause I posted an article today on our T (Canadian one, Telus) versus Verizon and why I prefer T. Your T is a good buy, but I still prefer the Canadian version for this one! ;-)

    Cheers,

    Mike
